If Machines Can Learn, Who Needs Scientists?
Machine Learning (ML) is now ubiquitous, with examples capturing the popular imagination ranging from triumph over human world champions at Chess and Go, to facial recognition and drug design. Recently a team from Google bested dozens of expert laboratories in the Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP) competition.
Applications of ML in NMR spectroscopy have a long history, and lessons drawn from that history suggest that scientists remain vital for curating the data used to train ML algorithms, and turning the results from ML "black boxes" into knowledge. ML is a tool that scientists can deploy alongside and in support of traditional hypothesis-based research.
