The presentation will consider the development of new techniques in multiscale rheology, nanoindentation, and tribology to study the mechanics of plant cells, polysaccharide and glycoprotein gels, and poroelastic (biphasic) nanocellulose composites. We highlight how these developments are informing the new mechanical models of soft systems that aim to describe plant growth, seed germination, food digestion, and mucociliary clearance. In particular, we focus on capabilities directed at capturing highly complex interactions occurring between biological polymers and surfaces. In addition we provide overview of newly developed tools.
