The University of Queensland’s Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) is at the forefront of imaging science and is the only centre of its kind in Australia.

CAI is a strategic initiative of The University of Queensland and reflects the growth in biotechnology and biomedical research requiring spectroscopic and imaging research capabilities. Led by the inaugural Director, Professor David Reutens, CAI brings together the skills of a critical mass of researchers and ‘state-of-the-art’ research instruments.

Imaging and spectroscopic techniques are key platform research technologies for studying the structure and function of living organisms in health and disease and facilitating drug discovery and validation. Together they speed translation of scientific discoveries to clinical realisation, enabling the goal of personalised medicine by better characterising disease and response to treatment in the individual patient.

The CAI research facility is characterised by:

Our Vision

Our vision is to be a world leader in the development and application of cutting-edge imaging science and technology through innovation, translation, education and collaboration.

Multimodality

CAI is an integrated research facility harnessing the spatial resolution of ultra-high field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), the sensitivity of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in detecting molecular targets, and the geometrical and electronic structural characterisation of molecules using high-resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.

Multidisciplinarity

To realise the full potential of imaging, CAI provides a rich collaborative environment for researchers working on innovations in imaging technology, imaging biomarker development and biomedical research. The impact of imaging on translation research is maximised through collaboration with clinical research sites and other local, national, and international research institutes. These facilities comprise a comprehensive ‘end-to-end’ biomedical imaging capability which allows integrated progression from the laboratory bench, through animal models, and into a clinical setting.
