Comparative Oncology and Large Animal PET/CT Imaging
Comparative oncology is the study of spontaneously occurring cancers in companion animals; in particular canines, as a model to further understand the mechanisms of human disease. Unlike transgenic animal models, spontaneous cancers in companion animals exhibit similar clinical presentations and pathophysiology to human tumours. A $2.5 million Australian Cancer Research Foundation grant enabled the purchase of a large-bore PET-CT scanner at the Centre for Advanced Imaging. CAI’s comparative oncology program is the first of its kind in Australia, offering researches access to PET/CT and standalone CT imaging.
