EPR Spectroscopist and CAI alumnus (Harmer Group), Dr Joshua Harbort presents:

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: A toolbox for characterising molecular structure and function

Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques (EPR) and density functional theory calculations (DFT) together form a powerful toolbox for characterising molecular structure and function in paramagnetic biological and synthetic catalysts. This talk will cover the work of my PhD project in applying these techniques to a diverse set of catalytic systems: investigating the binding mode interactions of a bacterial P450; developing methodology for using the intrinsic haem of a P450 as a DEER spin label in molecular distance measurements; and investigating the electronic structure and co-ordination environment of two ruthenium catalysts.
