Women Leading #ChooseToChallenge

In line with the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 theme #ChooseToChallenge, the WII annual event theme is Women Leading #ChooseToChallenge and will showcase the inspirational stories and journeys of successful women across STEMM leadership.

Women in Imaging 2021 will hear the journeys of special guest speakers in research and clinical practice, followed by open discussions and networking opportunities over canapés and drinks.

The first hour will include a series of 10-15 minute presentations from our speaker panel. The panel will be discussing a range of topics including:

How can we encourage, support or promote women in STEMM: challenging gender bias and inequity
Skills and mentorship that has helped them and challenges overcome
Forging your way as a woman in science/business (trials, tribulations, successes): useful tools going forward in STEMM

Speaker Bios:

Vanessa Barclay is an Operations Director for Medical Imaging Metro-North, Australia's largest Hospital and Health Service. Her role is pivotal in advocating for better collaboration and improved investment logic for  Imaging services within the public sector.  Vanessa has completed an MBA with UQ, majoring in entrepreneurship. Vanessa continues to support various cross-sector projects and commercialisation assessments for research studies.

Dr Sue Keay is the CEO of Queensland AI Hub after being Research Director for Cyber-Physical Systems at CSIRO’s Data61. Among many achievements, she has been responsible for setting up the world’s first robotic vision research centre and led the development of Australia’s first Robotics roadmap, outlining how robotics and automation will impact on every sector of the Australian economy.  Dr Keay was formerly the Chief Operating Officer for the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision and has an MBA from The University of Queensland Business School. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and chairs the Board of Robotics Australia Group, and serves on the Boards of the CRC for Optimising Resource Extraction and Women in Robotics. Dr Keay completed her PhD in Earth Sciences at The Australian National University in 1998 and is recognised as a Superstar of STEM and one of Queensland’s most influential people. 

Linda J. Richards AO, PhD, FAA, FAHMS is a Professor of Neuroscience at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) at The University of Queensland.  In January 2021 she commenced her new role as the Edison Professor of Neurobiology, Head of the Department of Neuroscience and Director, McDonnell Center for Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology, Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, USA.  Prof. Richards is an NHMRC Principal Research Fellow, Past President of the Australasian Neuroscience Society and former Co-chair of the Australian Brain Alliance, which is promulgating the case for a National Australian Brain Initiative to the Federal Government. Prof. Richards represents the ABA on the Strategy Committee of the International Brain Initiative and is the Patron and a Scientific Advisor for the support group, AusDoCC, for individuals with callosal dysgenesis and their families.  Her research focusses on understanding the cause of neurodevelopmental disorders and how the brain is wired during development to form functional circuits that mediate behaviour and cognition.
