  • New centre to push medical imaging boundaries

    The next generation of scientists who will expand the boundaries of biomedical imaging to improve healthcare will be trained at an $8.5 million research hub to be established at The University of Queensland Centre for Advanced Imaging.

  • CAI secures $4.7M for new ARC Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology

    UQ will have a new ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology, backed by $4.7 million in ARC funding and an additional $1 million provided by industry partners.
    The centre will train 20 industry-ready innovation scientists to tackle skills gaps in radiochemistry and diagnostic imaging in Australia’s medical technologies and pharmaceuticals sector.

  • CAI partners with Beijing Genomics Institute to develop early diagnostic tools for epilepsy

    Opening of new Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) laboratory at QIMR formalises partnerships with University of Queensland and University of Melbourne. In collaboration with BGI, the Centre for Advanced Imaging will combine anatomical imaging data with whole genome sequencing from patients with intractable focal epilepsy. The research aims to develop early diagnostic tools for this and other debilitating diseases.

    A trial by University of Queensland researchers will examine the effects of exercise on language learning in healthy older adults.

  • Accelerated MRI brain mapping technique to improve neurodegenerative diagnosis

    CAI researchers Dr Daniel Stäb, Dr Stephen Bollman and A/Prof Markus Barth are paving the way for improved diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease with a new accelerated MRI brain mapping technique.

  • NIH funding success for functional brain imaging research

    Congratulations to CAI researchers Associate Professor Barth and Associate Professor Kai-Hsiang Chuang, who were recently awarded funding through the NIH Brain Initiative and the NHMRC – NIH BRAIN scheme. The research, led by Dr Jonathan Polimeni at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Harvard, aims to increase the power of fMRI by advancing new techniques for imaging blood vessels in the human brain and tracking how they expand and contract following neuronal firing to control blood delivery. The team’s goal is to enable human brain function to be mapped at a finer scale than is currently possible.
