Postgraduate study in Magnetic Resonance Technology
Magnetic Resonance radiographers are in strong demand. Our postgraduate coursework programs are centred on the physics and technology surrounding magnetic resonance. Students can choose from a range of electives that explore clinical and physiological studies.
UQ's Magnetic Resonance Technology programs are designed for radiographers, biomedical engineers and other health professionals working with magnetic resonance imaging equipment. 2015 saw the 15th anniversary of the Master in Magnetic Resonance Technology program. For more information download the MRT brochure.
Students can choose from the following postgraduate coursework programs:
Graduate Certificate in Magnetic Resonance Technology
Claire Mulcahy
Shortly after completing my masters at UQ in 2012 I started a new position as a senior MRI research radiographer at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental health in Melbourne. I've been told that my UQ qualification was an asset in the job application and the knowledge I gained from the MRT course has been invaluable in my current role.
At the Florey I work in a small team of radiographers alongside expert physicians and world authorities in the scientific community investigating conditions such as stroke, epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease as well as advanced MRI techniques. My role involves scanning at 3T and 7T and performing fMRI, EEG-fMRI, MRS, ASL and diffusion MRI studies on participants of all ages without sedation or general anaesthesia (sometimes challenging!) and developing MRI protocols for local and large scale international imaging studies. I've been really fortunate since completing my masters to have presented my own research at the SMRT Australia New Zealand Chapter in Sydney in 2013 and the SMRT International Chapter meetings in 2014 and 2015 held in Milan and Toronto, respectively.

Since completing my Masters Degree in Magnetic Resonance Technology at UQ, it's been an interesting journey.
It took me over to London for a few years from 2006-2007, where I worked at the London Clinic and University College London. I then responded to an advertisement in The Australian for the supervising role at Queensland X-Ray, Mater Private Hospital, to which I was successful. I have been working there since 2007 and am really enjoying working in a great team of radiographers and doctors, where keeping abreast of the latest technology developments seems to be a priority.
I've presented at the Sonic Healthcare conference three times now and RADAIM, once and I am the clinical MRI lecturer at QUT for the undergraduate program. I have been very fortunate to have been able to continually renew my Level 2 accreditation with the ASMIRT (formerly AIR).
Lawrance Yip
I graduated from the MSc in MR Technology Program at The University of Queensland in 2003. Being a Senior Radiographer in charge of the MRI service of Department of Radiology, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, I could enhance my professional knowledge to lead a team of Radiographers for patient service, expand MRI clinical applications, support MRI-related research studies and commission service development etc.
In 2013, I was promoted to Manager of the Department in charge of Radiographer service of all imaging modalities. Currently, there are one 1.5T and one 3T MRI systems in my department to support patient service. An additional 1.5T MRI system will be installed in 2015/16 for service enhancement. Although I am busy with the daily administrative duties of the department, I am still engaged in clinical service of MRI to optimise the quality of MRI examinations using what I learnt from the MR Technology Program.
Dr John Totman
Dr. John Totman is a principle investigator and head of imaging operations at the A*STAR NUS Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) in Singapore and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore.
He received his Masters degree in Magnetic Resonance Technology from the University of Queensland and his PhD in Physics at the Sir Peter Mansfield MR Center at University of Nottingham. Dr Totman started working in medical imaging in 1986 and has specialised in MRI since 1994. He has helped establish or install MRI at 6 different centers and has experience in MRI crosses most clinical MRI vendors, magnetic field strengths and areas of clinical MRI research.
Susanne Hansen
Susanne Hansen is a Senior MRI Radiographer with Children's Health Queensland and has been working in the field of MRI since 2001. Early in her medical imaging career she developed a keen interest in MRI. Susanne completed her postgraduate qualifications at the University of Queensland with a Master of Magnetic Resonance Technology with electives in Management at the Centre for Magnetic Resonance (now Centre for Advanced Imaging) in 2004. The postgraduate program provided valuable skills in her clinical practice along with good networking opportunities.
She previously worked as a Senior Radiographer with Queensland X-ray at the Mater Private Hospital. Susanne is now enjoying the challenges of working with paediatric patients in a great multidisciplinary team at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital. She is actively engaged in the local MRI community and is a member of the SMRT.
Susanne has published articles and is an external peer reviewer for the Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences. She is also a Visiting Clinical Guest Lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology. Susanne lives in Brisbane and likes to travel the world with her husband.
UQ is one of the top 100 universities in the world. The Centre for Advanced Imaging is the largest MR facility in the southern hemisphere with 12 imaging and spectroscopy systems ranging from 1.5 to 21 Tesla.
Our students enjoy flexible delivery of our postgraduate coursework; all our courses can be delivered online and on campus.
All our students enjoy dedicated support from the education administration officer who provides accurate advice to prospective students. Our coursework is delivered through Blackboard where students can communicate with tutors and course coordinators, access course material and submit assessment.
Our programs are eligible for Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) CPD points accrual. You can find more information on how to accrue CPD points at the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy website.
