Congratulations to CAI PhD students Tom Shaw and Joshua Simpson whose publications were selected as joint winners of Round 1 of the CAI 2020 HDR publication competition.

CAI’s Director, Professor David Reutens, has been elected to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in recognition of distinguished professional achievements and outstanding leadership in health and medicine.

The University of Queensland’s Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) hosted a special visit from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies of The University of Edinburgh this month. As a joint engagement initiative between UQ Genomics, UQ School of Veterinary Science and the ARC Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology (CIBIT), the visit fostered important discussions for comparative oncology research and collaboration.

Hoover, the happy 10-year-old beagle, came to us diagnosed with prostate cancer. His parents wanted to help give him the best treatment they could. A novel nanomedicine, engineered by our Associate Professor Kris Thurecht and his team, is designed to specifically target a protein found in prostate cancers called prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA). In the hope to save Hoover, he became the first patient in the world to receive the novel nanomedicine.

The Centre was featured in the ABC Catalyst episode, 'Memory Matters', (aired 18 September 2018). The season finale meets our scientists working at the forefront of memory research, featuring Professor Markus Barth, Dr Maryam Ziaei and Nicole Atcheson. Our team designed a functional MRI (fMRI) activity to specifically show emotional responses to memories and images; which was conducted in our 7T MRI facility.

Venom from the giant red bull ant is helping University of Queensland scientists understand the evolution of animal toxins in work that could lead to better treatments for pain. Researchers from UQ’s Centre for Advanced Imaging and Institute for Molecular Bioscience have completed the first comprehensive study of ant venom, revealing toxins that stimulate the human nervous system to cause pain.

An $8.5 million Australian Research Council training centre at The University of Queensland will bring together innovation and technology in biomedicine. The magnetic resonance diffusion professional short course was run over the 7th and 8th of October. We had a small but diverse cohort of PhD students, radiographers, postdoctoral researchers and undergrads.

The 4th annual CAI symposium brought together researchers across the broad disciplines that utilise imaging and spectroscopy at UQ. This was exemplified by the two keynote addresses from eminent scientists in the field that highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of research and collaborations within the centre.
